While some factors that affect happiness are out of our control, there are always actions we can take to amp up good vibes. Consider trying a few of these habits (or all of them) and you’re guaranteed to give your year a little boost by bringing more happiness to your life.
1. Make someone smile
Make someone’s day by leaving a “you’re beautiful” note in their room or buying your younger sibling their favorite candy. Spreading happiness will not only cheer someone up, but it will also make you feel better too.
2. Reward yourself for small victories
A reward is anything that brings you pleasure. This could be anything from treating yourself to your favorite dessert, chocolate or even a trip somewhere. This motivates you to maintain focus and keep winning and it is a way to program yourself for long term achievement and happiness.
3. Practice gratitude
When you wake up in the morning or before you go to bed at night, take time to write down 3 things that you are grateful for. This will help you realize how blessed you actually are, even though you are probably too busy or stressed to see it.
4. Put down your electronic gadgets for an hour every day
Social networking is pretty amazing but also very addictive, which is why it is important to switch off for some time. You may find that you miss very little, and will have more time to do more with your life than spending it watching other people’s worlds through a screen.
5. Try something new
Break out of your normal routine and mix things up a little bit! It can be as simple as learning a new language or a popular Zim dancehall dance – anything to just get you out your comfort zone.
6. Say “thank you”
Even this small act of gratitude will boost your positivity.
7. Stop comparing
Focusing on your own journey and the things you’ve accomplished is a lot more productive than comparing yourself to other people.
8. Spend more time with yourself
Learning to enjoy your own company is very important. Go out for pizza by yourself, watch your favorite series or just meditate while listening to your own thoughts. You will feel refreshed.
9. Spend more time outside
Some fresh air will help to clear your head when you’re feeling anxious. It will also give you an energy boost and when your body feels good, your brain will follow.
10. Help someone
Feeling down? One of the quickest and most fulfilling ways to pick yourself back up is to do something kind for someone else. Feels good, especially when the person on the receiving end did not expect it from you.
11. Sweat it out
Whether it’s running a marathon or just taking a 20-minute walk, getting the heart pumping will decrease stress and clear your thoughts.
12. Make plans
Having something to look forward to brings some anticipation, which is like a secret weapon of happiness. Even if it’s plans to grab frozen yoghurt with your friend. Well, you might be having a busy week at work but at least you are meeting up with your boys over the weekend for some beers! That is something to look forward to right?
13. Learn to let go
You can boost your happiness by detaching from past negativity. You can’t go back and change the past, so let’s focus on the present instead.
14. Think Positive
You can’t control what happens to you, you can only control how you react to it. No matter how bad things may seem, be grateful. Never rely on other people to bring you happiness, it must come from within, so focus on creating a positive mindset!
